5 Tips to Help You Show Your Face on Socials When You’re Scared Sh*tless

Do you find showing up online, especially on social media, terrifying? Trust me, you're not alone. It took me years to muster the courage to literally just record a video, let alone upload it to my Instagram. Our ego wants to shield us from the unknown, because it feels dangerous and risky.

But once we take that leap and start sharing our faces, pictures, videos, and opinions, our businesses truly flourish. In fact, my spa consulting business didn’t really take off until I started showing my face on my socials.

I made those reels that everyone else was doing a few years ago where you point at the screen and share your tips. I was kind of making weird faces and didn’t know what to do with my mouth. Haha, I still remember how lame I felt shooting those videos, but they always got people chatting me up in my DM’s; they were feeling more connected to me because they could see me!

SO, not only did showing up online help my business, later on down the road, it also helped me gain followers, brand collaborations and publishing opportunities. So if you’re scared, you’re not alone. Just don’t let the fear stop you!

Here are my top 5 tips to give you the confidence boost you need when you're scared to show up online, they have helped me immensely and you can steal them too:

  1. Remember, no one who's doing more than you will criticize you. Only those who are doing less or not showing up themselves will have critiques and opinions. Realize that those who are ahead of you will likely reach out to help, understanding the challenges of being a content creator.

  2. Don't be afraid to let people see you try. Often, fear of failure holds us back from trying something new or expressing ourselves authentically. But refusing to try out of fear of judgment only leads to regret. Embrace vulnerability and take the leap; it will totally be worth it. You won’t fail. In the event that you do, no one will remember…people are more concerned with themselves.

  3. Accept that when you start showing up online, your family, friends, and even exes will see you in a new light….and that is OK! Understand that people may need time to adjust to your new public persona, but don't let their opinions hold you back. That’s on them. You have no control over anyone else’s feelings. Just keep the blinders on and go for it! You might even be surprised by their support.

  4. Your business's success hinges on your visibility. People trust businesses with visible faces behind them. In today's social media landscape, followers crave authenticity and connection. The days of feeds filled with graphics, random quotes and irrelevant photos are over. If you're not visible, your business may stagnate. Embrace being the face of your brand.

  5. Showing up with your face, voice, and unique perspectives builds credibility and authority in your niche. Don't shy away from sharing your opinions and emotions. Differentiate yourself from the crowd to become a recognized leader in your field. People crave your advice, your experience and your opinions. Be a little controversial, even…don’t just blend with the crowd. The goal is to be strong, memorable and authentically YOU.

Remember, confidence comes with practice. The more you show up, the more comfortable you'll become. So don't let fear hold you back—embrace the journey of showing up authentically online and watch your business thrive…you can do this!
